Whether you’re taking a day trip or planning a weekend getaway, traveling by rail is an easy and hassle-free way to tour Long Island South Shore. You’ll discover charming downtown’s and historic hamlets that are in close proximity to some of the most beautiful beaches in New York.
If you’re traveling from Manhattan, the opening of Grand Central LIRR station now provides two options – either Penn Station or Grand Central. Whichever station you travel from, the line extending across the South Shore goes all the way to Montauk. However, train frequency and number of transfers will depend on how far east you’re heading. So, be sure to check train schedules on the MTA website when you’re planning your journey.

Long Beach is a picturesque coastal city and barrier island located on Long Island’s Atlantic Coast. You’ll find it’s both unique and very convenient due to a rail line line that connects it directly to the mainland.
Long Beach is often referred to as the ‘City by the Sea’ due to its prime location on the Atlantic Ocean. It has a vibrant beachfront community and lively boardwalk that runs alongside miles of pristine sandy beaches. In addition to its natural beauty and year-round entertainment, Long Beach boasts a rich history and culture. The city is home to several museums and historical sites, including the Long Beach Historical Society.
Once you arrive you’ll discover miles of soft sandy beaches and beautiful canals situated throughout the city. Additionally, there are charming shops and boutiques, and lively entertainment provided by the many bars and restaurants.
Babylon on Long Island South Shore
Babylon is known for its beautiful waterfront views of the Great South Bay, historic architecture, and lively downtown area. Cedar Beach and Gilgo Beach are both situated nearby. These beaches boast pristine white sand, clear water, and stunning views of the surrounding area.
If you’re looking for other outdoor activities, Belmont Lake State Park is located in West Babylon. The park features scenic hiking trails, boating, golfing and camping. In the evening, Babylon comes alive with its many restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. You can catch live music, sample craft beers, or enjoy a gourmet meal at one of the many acclaimed restaurants.
Bayshore on Long Island South Shore
Bayshore is a charming hamlet situated on Long Island’s South Shore with a marina that offers breathtaking views of the Great South Bay. Additionally, Bayshore’s lively downtown area is home to an array of shops, restaurants, and bars.
For beach-goers, a short ferry ride will take you to Fire Island, a stunning barrier island that stretches across the South Shore. Fire Island is a must-visit destination due to its pristine white sandy beaches, nature trails, and outdoor activities.
The ferry service from Bayshore provides connections to various beach towns on Fire Island. These include Atlantique Beach, Fair Harbour Beach, Kismet Beach, Ocean Bay Park Beach, Ocean Beach, Saltaire Beach, and Seaview Beach. So you’re spoiled for choice!
Sayville on Long Island South Shore
Sayville is another charming hamlet located on the Long Island South Shore. Stunning waterfront views, walkable downtown area, and historic architecture make Sayville a great destination to visit by rail.
The vibrant downtown area has gorgeous examples of Victorian architecture. You can also explore nearby Islip Grange, a historical site that provides a glimpse into the rich local history.
Sayville also has a ferry service to Fire Island, docking at Cherry Grove Beach, Sailors Haven Beach, and Fire Island Pines. Here, you’ll discover pristine sandy beaches with crystal clear water, winding boardwalks, and plenty of shopping and dining options.
If you visit Fire Island Pines, I recommend checking out the Sunken Forest. It’s a beautifully unique attraction, featuring a boardwalk that takes you through a forest that’s been naturally preserved and untouched for centuries.
Patchogue on Long Island South Shore
Patchogue is a beautiful example of historical architecture alongside a bustling downtown of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Home to several cultural attractions, including the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts and the award-winning BrickHouse Brewery.
From Patchogue you can take a ferry to Davis Park on Fire Island. Here you’ll discover a beautiful beach with soft sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s also home to the largest marina on Fire Island, an ocean view restaurant and a casino bar!
The Hamptons on Long Island South Fork

The Hamptons combine Westhampton, Southhampton and East Hampton, which are all accessible via the Long Island Rail Road.
Westhampton
Westhampton has a quaint downtown area with charming tree-lined streets and historic architecture. It’s home to several magnificent beaches, including Cupsogue Beach, Pikes Beach and Rogers Beach. Westhampton is a fairly quiet town with a more local feel, making it a great place to unwind. You can catch a movie or show at the Hampton Arts Cinema, sample fresh seafood, or relax with a drink on the marina, with breathtaking sunset views over the bay.
For nature lovers, you can explore the nearby Quogue Wildlife Refuge. This local attraction features miles of beautiful hiking trails, freshwater ponds, and diverse wildlife.
Southhampton
Southampton is known for its beautiful beaches, elegant mansions, and high-end boutiques. It is also home to several magnificent beaches, including Cooper’s Beach, which has been named one of the best beaches in the United States by Dr. Beach. The beach boasts pristine white sand, clear blue water, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.
For those interested in history and culture, the Southampton History Museum offers fascinating exhibits on the area’s rich history, or the Parrish Art Museum, which showcases a collection of American art.
East Hampton
One of the main attractions in East Hampton is Main Beach, which is consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the country. It’s clean and well-maintained, with crystal clear waters and plenty of space to spread out and relax. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can rent a surfboard and hit the waves.
Another popular spot in East Hampton is the East Hampton Historical Society, which features exhibits and artifacts that showcase the town’s rich history. I also recommend visiting the Pollock-Krasner House, which pays tribute to the famous artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner who called East Hampton home for many years.
If you’re more into shopping and dining, East Hampton has plenty of options to choose from. Stroll down Main Street and you’ll find an array of boutique shops and restaurants featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Montauk on the tip of South Fork peninsula

Montauk is a popular destination on the very east end of Long Island South Shore. The train ride takes approximately 3 hours from Manhattan and takes you through some beautiful coastal scenery.
Once you arrive in Montauk, you’ll find a charming seaside village with plenty of things to do. One of the most popular attractions is Montauk Point Lighthouse, which is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the history of the lighthouse and the surrounding area.
If you’re looking for outdoor activities, Montauk has plenty to offer. You can go kayaking or surfing, or simply relax on one of the many beautiful beaches. Hither Hills State Park is a great spot for hiking and camping, offering stunning views of the coastline.
Shopping and dining options are abound in Montauk as well. You can browse the many boutique shops or dine at one of the superb restaurants featuring locally caught seafood and other fresh ingredients.
