Finding new and exciting long distance date ideas is a really important element in a long distance relationship. The time between visits can seem to really drag on, so you need to find fun ways to make the most of your time apart. I’ve lost count of the number of online date nights shared with my significant other. After all, eight years in a long-distance relationship is a long time. Despite losing count, we never lost enthusiasm and to this day often reminisce about the unique times we shared from a distance.

I’d feel so excited leading up to the weekend, knowing we’d be spending time together doing things we love. We’d even decline invitations for nights out with friends and instead stay in and spend time trying out long-distance relationship date ideas. So, I’ve curated my top 5 fun long distance date ideas to do this weekend to help make the most of your time apart.

From virtual movie nights to online gaming sessions, these date ideas are sure to make your long distance relationship feel more connected. So, why not give them a go and try something new with your significant other this weekend? Grab a snack, get comfortable, and let’s start planning your perfect long distance date night!

1. Forget long distance date night, have LDR date days!

Schedule an entire day, or weekend even, where you have no plans, nowhere to be, and nothing to do. You’ve stocked up your cupboards, replenished your wine rack, and have everything you need for a cozy weekend with no reason to leave the house.

Start your call as soon as you are both awake. We would voice call rather than video so you can get comfy and lounge around together without needing to position a camera. We spent many long distance date weekends together and it felt intimate, low-key, and relaxed. The anticipation leading up to long distance date weekends was magical and we loved the opportunity to spend hours in each others company.

So get comfy in your best lounge-wear, cancel your schedule and get ready for a relaxed, no stress weekend together. Order food in, share pictures of brunch and dinner, turn off your TV and lie back and chat. Take a relaxing bath. Shut out the rest of world and enjoy a cozy long distance date weekend together with just the two of you.

2. Go for walk in nature for your long distance date

At first, I felt self-conscious walking around outside with earbuds in while chatting with my significant other, imagining people thought I was talking to myself. I soon realized that nobody cared, and it was quite common so soon forgot about my insecurities and thought nothing of it.

We would walk through nearby parks, along local rivers, and across areas of natural beauty. We’d get away from the crowds by heading towards more remote spots, chatting about our day and describing the beautiful scenery and wildlife as we went. We shared photographs of what we saw so we could each experience one another’s walks.

Sharing a quick snap is a really helpful way to feel more immersed in each others day. Even mundane things, such as what you’re eating for breakfast, a new home decor arrangement, or a selfie with a friend while out for lunch can help paint a picture. As they say, a picture tells a thousand words.

3. Watch TV shows, movies, You Tube videos together

We would often get excited about a new movie being released and make plans together to watch it at the cinema during one of our visits. In between this, you can choose a TV series or a movie available on demand and align the times that you watch it together. There are even apps available to help you watch TV together online, such as  Teleparty and Scener.

4. Video Games

I would have made this my first recommendation for a long-distance relationship date night as this is how my SO and I met, however, I know not everyone enjoys video games.

As well as being the place where we met, I found that it provided an additional way of connecting. Sharing the same space, working towards the same goal and getting warm fuzzy feelings from helping each other out! We’d spent hours doing this.

You don’t have to be a serious player either, and you don’t need an expensive console or game. You can use free to play mobile app games. There are loads of fun free to play multiplayer games available online. You can spend endless hours building something together.

5. Cooking a meal together

Cooking meals together is a really intimate date night in a long-distant relationship. Start with planning the menu together. What’s for main, desert, are you going to have appetizers, what about cocktails, wine, entrees?

Then you have the excitement of finding the best ingredients, cooking together, any finally enjoying the fruits of your labor. Sharing photo’s, maybe a little light-heart competition. In all, you get to enjoy time together making and enjoying the meal together.

I would enjoy this far more than if I were cooking and eating alone. It’s something I always struggled with when living alone. I’d love cooking when I had company and for dinner parties, but cooking for myself, I’d cut corners and wouldn’t enjoy the process as much. So, cooking together over video as a date night always felt more special and enjoyable.

If after all your efforts during your date night one of you ends up with a disaster, you can laugh it off and order takeout.

Conclusion

This list is not an exhaustive by any means, but it is a few of my favorite date night ideas to bring a little fun into a long-distance relationship. We have a lot of fun memories during the times that we were apart, in between our precious few weeks together. So, I hope I can bring little inspiration for your next long distance date night.
